April 17 - "Something You Don't Like"

Okay, I know I usually don't get involved in sporting matters on the social media front. But after Sid the Kid  24 year old, grown ass man so eloquently stated on Sunday how he doesn't like anyone on the Flyers based on the fact that he doesn't like them (huh?), this just seemed like a no brainer. And while I don't share the enthusiasm of the classy Philly fan behind him in this picture - I still don't like him. Never have, probably never will. Sorry friends in Pittsburgh.

  1. I must say I like the Philly/Pgh rivalry - I expect that you wouldn't like players on our team. But I found it a BIT ridiculous how up in arms everyone got over one man's statement about your team. A team that was very clear about not liking him FIRST (with chants and signs and boos and big freakin newspaper headlines). And then the organization sanctioned shirts that said 'we don't like you either' as if he started something. I respect you not liking him. I expect fans to have opinions. But an organization to go there. For the flyers to stamp their name on an insult to one guy and pass it out to a stadium. Sorry friends in Philly, I didn't like that.

(I will say that if I could take away how our team acted in game 3 - which I was not proud of at all. It was a great series, and I enjoyed watching it a lot)

  2. wow. okay. now that i re-read myself, I feel I should say that I have a mama bear type love and protection for Sid Crosby because of our mutual concussions and sometimes I go overboard (see the all caps used above). I hope no one is offended by what I wrote and people can just read that as the crazy fan from pittsburgh that hit her head and will say crazy things to defend the guy that also hit his head (even if it doesn't make sense)

p.s. Tim I"m so glad this series is over and we aren't on opposite sides of cheering anymore...
till the bulls play the sixers in like a week

    1. Hah. No worries, you and your misguided fandom can find safe harbor here. ;)

I think, first off, that Crosby's comment drew such ire because of it's totality. He doesn't like a single person on the Flyers team? Not Max Talbot, who was his teammate on the Pens for several years? Not Chris Pronger, who he won a Gold medal with in the 2010 Olympics? Or what about Matt Read or Sean Couturier - rookies whom he's played against about 5 times. Is that enough time to decide that you don't like them? I know, this is probably nitpicking, but still.

Secondly, to qualify this unmitigated dislike with nothing more than "because I don't like em'"? That's tantamount to your parents telling you, "Because I said so." I'm okay with Crosby not liking Scott Hartnell. Heck, if I played against Scott Hartnell I wouldn't like him either. But say you don't like playing against (A) because... he says mean things about your gross caterpillar mustache.... or because he slashes the backs of your knees all the time.

Especially when dealing with Philly, where everyone (slightly more during a run to the playoffs) considers themselves the 21st player of the team to begin with. When Sid said he doesn't like anyone on the team, he inadvertently included every greasy haired, gold chain wearing south Philadelphian in a Danny Briere tshirt.

Wow. Wordy much? Anyway. I don't like Sidney because he was a superstar before he ever played a game in the NHL and he thinks that this stardom equates to a different set of rules for him and against him. I don't like him because he dives with more intent than Greg Louganis. I don't like him because he doesn't own up to the fact that he's a jerk on the ice. Referring back to Scottie Hartnell - he's a jerk, and he's proud of it. Let your freak flag fly, Sid. Embrace your annoyingness. Don't say that you're a more grown up, mature player who doesn't complain anymore and then go on a national stage and show everyone the exact opposite.

      That's all.

      :)

Ps: I will never be on the Sixers' side. Or the Phillies'. If the Eagles happen to play the Steelers in the superbowl, well then that might be a different story. Expect an equally scathing blog post about Big Ben in that case.
